Laura: See page 309 of the book "Modeling plant and soil systems" edited 
by R. J. Hanks and J. T. Ritchie. An algorithm for this conversion already 
exists in the subroutine NFACTO. You would need to edit and recompile the 
source code to print out values of the Zadoks scale.
