STATE OF THE UNIVERSITY ADDRESS: President Michael F. Adams looked
back 100 years to when Chancellor Walter B. Hill set UGA on a course
that would transform it from a small liberal arts school to a major
public research university. Adams said the principles of wisdom,
justice and moderation will continue to guide UGA in the 21st
century.

2000 ECONOMIC FORECAST: Forecasters in the Terry College of Business
say the economy still has lots of steam. Dean P. George Benson says
the record for uninterrupted growth in the U.S. economy--set in the
1960s--will be broken in February.

CHILD-CARE TRAINING GRANT: A $770,000 grant from the Goizueta
Foundation to the College of Family and Consumer Sciences will fund a
project to expand training opportunities for child-care providers
throughout the state, supporting Gov. Roy Barnes' Georgia Early
Learning Initiative.

RESEARCH
LICENSING INCOME, START-UPS GENERATE REVENUE: The UGA Research
Foundation earned more than $3 million in licensing income and
launched seven start-up companies in 1998--surpassing such peer
institutions as Penn State, Indiana University and the University of
Tennessee, according to a survey released last month by the
Association of University Technology Managers.

BENT OUT OF SHAPE: UGA forestry researchers may have discovered why
some pines grow straight and tall while other are twisted and bent.
Stem "sinuosity" is serious business since crooked trunks drastically
reduce the value of pine trees--relegating them to pulpwood rather
than the higher-priced saw-timber market.

KING WEEK CELEBRATION: The university's annual celebration honoring
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will include a Gospelfest, an exhibition
at the Georgia Museum of Art, a cinema roundtable, and community
service work, among other activities beginning Jan. 18.

MASTERWORKS FROM MEXICO: The Georgia Museum of Art will exhibit
"Masterworks from the San Carlos National Museum of Art, Mexico City"
from Jan. 22 through March 19. The comprehensive selection of
paintings, including works by Hals, Rubens and Goya, has never before
been exhibited in the U.S.

CATTLE CLONING: The Associated Press writes about UGA researcher
Steve Stice and his staff, who are working to clone cattle -- not
just to produce a better steak but to eventually provide new sources
of medicines and organs, reduce birth defects and help feed people in
poor countries.

TOM RODGERS, who has been associate vice president for public service
and outreach since 1994, will serve as interim vice president while a
search committee seeks a successor to S. Eugene Younts, who stepped
down from that position Dec. 31 after 28 years.

KAREN WEBB, who has served as director of recruitment and retention
for UGA's Graduate School since last January, has accepted an
