Peabody Awards were held at the Waldorf=Astoria hotel.  NBC Today Show
host Matt Lauer emceed today's ceremonies and a special video tribute
to the late Barry Sherman, former Peabody Awards director who died in

LADY BULLDOGS WIN ANOTHER NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP:
The University of Georgia's women's tennis team has won the program's
second national championship.  The Lady Bulldogs defeated top-ranked
Stanford at the NCAA championships in Malibu,
Calif.

FIFTH-GENERATION LAW STUDENT AMONG THOSE RECEIVING DEGREE FROM UGA:
Elizabeth Kanne, a fifth-generation graduate from UGA's law school, was
among those who received a degree at the School of Law's Commencement
exercises held May 19 on North Campus.  Georgia Governor Roy Barnes, a
UGA alumnus himself, delivered the graduation speech.

2000 FOUNDATION FELLOWS ANNOUNCED:
Twenty-four students from Georgia and six other states are recipients
of the university's prestigious Foundation Fellowship, which covers all
costs for four years of undergraduate study and includes opportunities
for international travel-study and other academic enrichment
experiences.

 ACETAMINOPHIN CAN REDUCE THREAT OF HARDENING OF THE ARTERIES,
ACCORDING TO UGA RESEARCH: Research findings by pharmacy professor
Phillip Greenspan suggests that acetaminophen can block the enzyme
which causes hardening of the arteries.  Greenspan presented his
research results on May 21 at the First Conference on Arteriosclerosis,
Thrombosis and Vascular Biology co-sponsored by the American Heart
Association and the North American Vascular Biology Organization in
Denver, Colo.

UGA'S GOVERNMENTAL RELATIONS VP ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT:
Larry Weatherford, UGA's vice president for governmental relations, has
announced his intention to retire Dec. 1.  Weatherford has been at UGA
since 1988 after working for 34 years in a variety of state and federal
government administrative positions.

SYMPOSIUM HONORS LATE PROFESSOR'S CONTRIBUTIONS TO SCIENCE:
UGA's genetics department will sponsor a research symposium May 26-28
in honor of former UGA professor Lois Miller.  Miller, a noted
scientist and professor in the field of genetics and entomology, died
Nov. 9, 1999, following a long
illness.
