JUDGE ISSUES RULINGS IN LAWSUIT: Federal District Court Judge B.
Avant Edenfield issued several rulings Feb. 10 in connection with a
lawsuit challenging the university's admissions policies. Edenfield
ruled that the case is no longer certified as a class action, denied
the plaintiffs' motion for an injunction that would have halted the
current admissions process, and affirmed a previous ruling that the
plaintiffs cannot pursue damages from UGA President Michael F. Adams
and Chancellor Stephen Portch personally. Edenfield also denied a
motion for a change of venue.
FINALISTS NAMED FOR PUBLIC SERVICE VP: Three finalists have been
chosen for the position of vice president for public service and
outreach at UGA from among 50 candidates. They are: Thomas Rodgers,
interim VP for public service and outreach; Arthur Dunning, a senior
vice chancellor with the University System of Georgia Board of
Regents; and Janet Lewis, dean of continuing and distance education
at the University of South Dakota.

NEW ACADEMIC UNITS PROPOSED: The Institutional Strategic Planning
Advisory Group recently heard from faculty members working on
proposals for new academic units at UGA. These include a new School
of Public and International Affairs, a College of the Environment and
a New Media Institute.

ADAMS TESTIFIES ABOUT THE WWW: While the World Wide Web can convey
information and improve learning, it should never take the place of
face-to-face "interchange and discussion" between teacher and
student, President Michael F. Adams told a Congressional panel on

STUDENT RECOGNIZED BY GENERAL ASSEMBLY: Each year, the Georgia
General Assembly recognizes students for academic achievements. Kyle
Wingfield, a junior from Dalton studying publication management in
the College of Journalism and Mass Communication, is the honoree from
UGA. He holds a Foundation Fellowship, UGA's most prestigious
academic award.

WILD ANIMAL DISEASES POSE THREAT: Newly discovered infectious
diseases of free-living wild animals may pose an increasing and
significant threat to human health and to global biodiversity,
according to Peter Daszak, of UGA's Institute of Ecology and botany
department, who co-authored a report on the scope of the problem that
appeared in the journal Science last month.
