UGA NEWS

UGA ALUMNI CLUB IN ATLANTA TO OPEN:
The new UGA Alumni Club, located in the Atlanta Financial Center in
Buckhead, will officially open Feb. 26 with a gala black-tie event.
The 10,000-square-foot facility is leased by UGA's National Alumni
Association, which will offer the facilities to alumni and to UGA
schools and colleges and other units for meetings and functions.

PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING UGA PROFESSOR WINS PRESTIGIOUS SARTON AWARD:
Edward Larson, a professor of history and law at the University of
Georgia, has won the prestigious George Sarton Award given by the
American Association for the Advancement of Science. He delivered the
George Sarton Lecture at the association's annual meeting in
Washington D.C. on Feb. 20.  Larson won a Pulitzer Prize in 1998 for
his book Summer for the Gods.

UGA PARTNERS WITH WEBCT TO CREATE ONLINE "CHEMISTRY COMMUNITY":
Charles H. Atwood and Joel A. Caughran, two UGA chemistry professors,
are working with WebCT -- considered a leader in the e-learning
marketplace -- to create the WebCT Chemistry Community.  The Web site
provides chemistry-related content, communication and support
opportunities and tools for students and faculty worldwide.

EVENTS

"FOOT SOLDIERS FOR EQUAL JUSTICE":
The screening of a documentary chronicling the efforts of Federal
Judge Horace Ward, the LaGrange native who was the first African
merican to sue for admission to UGA's School of Law, is scheduled for
Tuesday, Feb. 22 in Masters Hall of the Georgia Center for Continuing
Education.  "Foot Soldiers for Equal Justice," produced by University
of Georgia professor Maurice Daniels, will premiere Feb. 28 at 10:30
p.m. on Georgia Public Television.

ON THE MOVE

MARY BUCZEK has been named volleyball coach at UGA. The Atlantic
Coast Conference 1999 Coach of the Year, she built Wake Forest into
an ACC and national contender after resurrecting the program in 1996.

WILD WEB HEARS HOOFBEAT OF LAWMAKERS:
Walter Hellerstein, e-commerce expert and professor in  UGA's School
of Law, is quoted in a Christian Science Monitor story about
state and federal lawmakers crafting legislation that will affect
Web-based business.

LAB SHOWS NATIVE PLANTS' POTENTIAL:
University of Georgia horticulturist John Ruter is quoted in an
Associated Press story about indigenous plant life.  The story notes
that a research coordinator in Tifton, using a plan developed by a
University of Georgia landscape architecture student, has used more
than 100 species of trees, bushes and grasses to re-create Georgia's
coastal plain.

GALILEO REMEMBERED:
UGA professor Tom Lessl is quoted in a FOX News story about the
legendary astronomer Galileo Galilei.   Lessl comments on the role
