IMPACT OF PROPOSED STATE BUDGET: The fiscal year 2001 budget
now under consideration by the Georgia General Assembly will result in
a "steady-state year, but no retrenchment" for the University of Georgia,
says President Michael F. Adams. Among Gov. Barnes'
recommendations is $13.6 million to equip six University System facilities,
including UGA's new Student Learning Center.

STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS IN NEW PHASE: UGA's strategic
planning process, under way for nearly a year, will now address the
framing of the institutional strategic plan. The Strategic Planning
Advisory Group, which meets weekly, has reviewed plans from the
university's 13 schools and colleges and other major campus units and
will now begin to make decisions about institutional priorities.

UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY MOURNS TWO FACULTY MEMBERS:
The university lost two respected, long-time faculty members last week:
Stanley Lindberg, editor of The Georgia Review, and Alan Jaworski, head
of the botany department. Under Lindberg's editorship, The Georgia
Review became one of the nation's most respected literary journals.
Jaworski, a past recipient of the Josiah Meigs teaching award, taught
thousands of students in introductory biology courses and was known
as a "student's teacher."

RESEARCH

HIV-AIDS CAMPAIGNS IN AFRICA NOT WORKING: An astounding
67 per cent of all individuals with HIV or AIDS live in sub-Saharan
Africa. A new study by speech communications faculty member Kenzie
Cameron and several co-authors indicates that one reason for the high
infection rates may be the failure of educational efforts by both African
and international health organizations.
