FOUNDATION FELLOWS FINALISTS VISIT CAMPUS:
Sixty prospective freshmen competing for UGA's most prestigious
scholarship award for undergraduates came to campus for the last leg
of the selection process Feb. 25 and 26. The students -- from Georgia
and nine other states -- have an average SAT of 1513 and high school
GPA of 4.07 (on a 4.0 scale).

JOURNALISM DEAN RESIGNS:
J. Thomas Russell announced that he will resign as dean of the Grady
College of Journalism and Mass Communication effective June 30, 2000
to take a teaching position at Piedmont College, where a new mass
communication program is being planned.

UNIQUE FOLK MUSIC PRESERVED:
A project to preserve unique field recordings of Georgia folk music
performers taped by UGA professor and folklorist Art Rosenbaum has
been completed by the University Libraries, ensuring their existence
for future generations.

ALUMNUS LOUIS SOHN REMEMBERED FOR UGA SUPPORT:
Retired businessman Louis S. Sohn Jr., an ardent UGA supporter and
alumni leader, died Feb. 23 at his home in Marietta following a
lengthy illness.  President Michael F. Adams called him "one of the
University of Georgia's most devoted and enthusiastic alumni."

RESEARCH

HISTORIAN CHRONICLES CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST:
Chana Kai Lee, an associate professor of history and women's studies
at UGA, is the author of a biography of Fannie Lou Hamer, one of the
"mothers" of the civil rights movement. Hamer, Lee notes, drew
"strength and inspiration from poverty and racism."

The story of Federal Judge Horace Ward, the LaGrange native who was
the first African American to sue for admission to UGA's School of
Law premieres Monday Feb 28 at 10:30 p.m. on Georgia Public
Television. The documentary is produced by University of Georgia
professor Maurice Daniels,

Big-name banks and consulting firms are increasingly looking to large
