UGA DEAN NAMED "LEADER OF THE YEAR" BY NATIONAL AG PUBLICATION:
Gale Buchanan, dean of the University of Georgia College of
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, has been named a 1999 Leader
of the Year by Progressive Farmer magazine. Progressive Farmer
editors first began naming Leaders of the Year in 1943. The awards
are based on the leader's positive impact on agriculture and work in
the person's own state.

UGA SOPHOMORE ELECTED VICE PRESIDENT OF NATIONAL ORGANIZATION:
Hoschton, Ga., native Carol Spruill, a sophomore at the University of
Georgia, was recently elected national vice president of the Future
Farmers of America  Southern Region.  Her primary duties include
serving members nationwide and speaking at conventions.

FORMER UGA JUDICIAL AFFAIRS DIRECTOR HONORED BY NATIONAL ASSOCIATION:
William Bracewell, who retired last year as director of judicial
programs at the University of Georgia, recently received the Donald
D. Gehring Award -- the highest award from the Association for
Student Judicial Affairs for distinguished professional service.  The
Gehring Award is given to one ASJA member each year for sustained
performance in service to the association.

UGA TO HOLD SUMMER COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES:
The University of Georgia will hold a commencement in August so
students who graduate at the end of summer semester won't have to
return to campus four months later to participate in a graduation
ceremony. This year's ceremony will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 15,
in Stegeman Coliseum.

UGA STUDENT-ATHLETES GRADUATION RATE AT ALL-TIME HIGH:
The annual NCAA national study on graduation rates show that seventy
percent (70%) of University of Georgia student-athletes who entered
school in 1993 graduated within six years, marking the first time the
student-athletes' graduation rate exceeded that of the general
student population (65%).  Most notable among the Georgia figures is
that the football graduation rate for the 1993 freshman class was 75
percent -- significantly higher than both the overall student-athlete
rate and the overall student population rate.

ART FACULTY HANGS IT UP:
The Lyndon House Arts Center in downtown Athens is currently showing
works by faculty members in UGA's Lamar Dodd School of Art.  The
exhibition, part of the "Celebrate 2000" campaign, will be up through
March 25.

The New York Times quotes Susan Wessler, genetics expert at the
University of Georgia, in a Feb. 29 article about new developments in
the genetic engineering of plants and crops.

"BIG RETAIL CHAINS SLIGHT BLACK AREAS":
Jeff Humphreys, director of UGA's Selig Center for Economic Growth,
is quoted in a Feb. 29 Toledo Blade business story about the lack of
large retail chains located in neighborhoods with large minority
populations, despite the growth and strength of African American
buying power in the U.S.

COMMUNIVERSITY -- UGA'S LARGEST STUDENT VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION:
Communiversity is a student-run volunteer organization whose primary
purpose is to recruit, train, and assign volunteers to community
service. Communiversity, with its nine specialized programs --
including the Alternative Spring Break program, in which students
dedicate time during their mid-semester break to various communities
in the Southeast  -- is the largest student volunteer organization on
campus.
