RESEARCH

FORMOSAN TERMITES ARE BIG CONCERN: UGA ecologist Mark Hunter predicts
that the greatest challenge in the man-insect wars in the new
millenium, at least in the U.S., may be Formosan termites, which
have been gnawing their way north from the Louisiana-Texas coast for
the past 35 years.

IN THE NEWS

RENAISSANCE OF THE CLASSICS: The current interest in
"multiculturalism" is one of several factors attracting renewed
student interest in classical studies, according to Richard LaFleur,
head of UGA's classics department, who is quoted on the subject in
the Christian Science Monitor.

COLD HELPED PEACH, BLUEBERRY CROPS: UGA extension coordinators told
the Associated Press that back-to-back winter storms in Georgia were
a blessing for the state's peach and blueberry crops, which need
"chill hours" to produce fruit. Vidalia onions suffered only minor
damage from the weather. The bad news: the cold had little affect on
insects.
