Although this proposal has been voiced in Japan, there may be points useful
to discuss in 'the West'; so I alert readers to the following collection of
reports from a symposium:-

'Maps and Museums in the Age of Information Technologies (IT)' in:
'Geographical Review of Japan : English Edition' (Tokyo : Association of
Japanese Geographers), October 2002, 75(12), 279-284, ISSN 0289-6001

The reports begin: "This symposium was organized by the Committee for
Promotion of the Establishment of the National Museum for Map & GIS of the
Association of Japanese Geographers.", and is signed by the organizing
Committee (from 3 universities and one research institute). Reports are
filed from Geographical Survey Institute, Japan Hydrographic and
Oceanographic Dept, Heibonsha Cartographic Pub. Co., Univ. of Tokyo, Lake
Biwa Res. Inst., National Museum of Japanese History, National Diet Library,
and from Kokusai Kogyo Ltd
