I was north of Los Angeles, and collected on land, fresh water clams, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch across the width, white with a blue vertex (outside coloration).  Any suggestions what I found?  Thanks,  Jack Donner  [log in to unmask]

>The second can only be Cyrogenia aberti.  Irrorata never crosses to the west of the Mississippi and similarly aberti is never east of the Mississippi River.  Ref: Ron Oesch's Missouri Naiades, p. 145 quoting Dr. David Stansbery.  C. aberti does exist in the St. Francois in the areas not dammed; and the muskrats do love them.  I have seen them this past fall there, mainly in muskrat middens.  They are also in the Black River in Arkansas, where they can get very large.  Their other location is the Spring River drainage in s.w. Missouri to Kansas to Oklahoma.  I was on the Spring River in September but did not see any there in Missouri sites I visited.
>The third resembles Anodontites trapesialis (Lamarck, 1819) which is widespread in S. America and Simpson :1914 lists it also from Peru; however I certainly not consider that definitive, and readily defer to the folks like Kevin Cummings on naiades from that continent.
