Hiroshi, Sorry, I cannot check what is going on, as my DSSAT freaks out if I only look at it (and by now I go wild also.......). I want to have clean list of fileX's, weather and soil files (because I have been playing around with them so much), so I installed the program anew, but for whatever reason it did not install the soil files completely and there was no SOILN030.SOL, so I reinstalled it another time (with the same result). By the way, you write about SOILN040.SOL:, but isn't it 030 in the released DSSAT4 version (with the version under development we are already at 050)? Having the filename wrong may explain why it does not respond to differences between RE005 and RE008, as it uses the default option then (I think) and thus all are going to be the same. Editing the file with Notepad should go fine; I use an editor all the time for fileX, *.WTH, SOIL.SOL, SOMFIX_C.SOL, etc. But please do realize that if you are not 100% sure what you are doing, then stay away from it, as many files are strict on how the precise layout should be (shift a parameter one position and it does not work), so always keep the --unedited-- original as reference point. Hope this is of any help. Maybe someone else can fillow up whether it is indeed SOILN030 or SOILN040. If you are so busy please forget about CropTest and let me ask you only about changing composition of organic matter inputs with DSSAT version 4.0. With METHOD=G (CERES-based option), I ran simulations for incorporation of legume cover crop residue and cattle compost with the default and measured composition. In SOILN040.SOL I defined the composition as below. But, I could not see RE001 to RE008 options in fileX (MZX) from XBuild, and therefore I edited the fileX with Notepad. I chose RE005 for compost and RE008 for legume. Nonetheless, N mineralization between default and measured composition was identical. Something wrong with me? __________________________ CARB CELL LIGN RE001 0.20 0.70 0.10 (default) RE005 0.22 0.49 0.29 (measured for compost) RE008 0.43 0.52 0.05 (measured for legume) Cheers, Hiroshi >Concerning your follow-up question: >1. Yes, you can run the same fileX for both versions, but note that with >v4.0 there is a switch MESOM on the METHODS line for which SOM module to >use: MESOM = P for CENTURY, MESOM = G for CERES. >2. Yes, but also try the CENTURY-based SOM/residue module! >3. I am sorry, I have hardly worked with DSSAT4 and therefore never looked >at CropTest, as I am full time busy with developing the next DSSAT version >(which will incorporate a P module), but I will ask someone who does know >and then let the list know.
