Chris, I prefer to carry mine with me to ensure softer handling, but depending on what and how much this is not always possible. I am in Australia so things are a little different but as long as the specimens are clean or sealed with out obvious mess/smell/or insects and not big CITES species like Charonia tritonis or Hippopus - I have had no trouble. If something is a little smelly I stick it in check on luggage as it can get overpowering in the cabin.
