I would like to express my thanks to the many kind, welcoming replies to my
introductory post. Thank you for making me feel welcome. A few had asked
for further information about myself so here it is:) I am a native of
Panama City FL.. My father was Air Force and he was stationed here for the
rest of his time in untill he retired. I remember spending many fun days
with my mon and dad walking the beaches of Tyndall AFB, and snorkling in
the waters around the area. My dad has been collecting shells for as long
as I can remember and it is from him that I developed my interest in them.
After graduation I joined the navy and spent the next 14 years serving my
country. While serving, I took the opportunities as they came to collect
shells from the places I'd been (Cuba, Jamacia, Italy, Ireland, Egypt,
Saudi Arabia, etc...). Three years ago I developed some medical problems
and was medically discharged. I returned to my childhood home and have once
again found the fun of shelling here in the panhandle. I really don't have
a favorite type of shell, they are all interesting and fun to collect. As
far as my collecting goes, I tend to keep only one or two specimens and
generally only add what I don't already have to my collection.I am a firm
believer in conservation. Having collected shells on the basis of fun and
them looking so interesting, I never got around to educating myself on the
scientific names, life of the animals, etc... It is with the hope of
correcting that deficency that I joined the local shell club and I look
forwards to learning more about the shells I have. Hopefully my kids will
take an interest in it as they really enjoy the shells as well:) I can't
say I'll be much of a poster here, but I can already see this will be an
excellant source of information. Again, thank you for the warm welcomes.
Fair winds and following seas to you all:)
