Hello,

Land snails, especially Helix, were popular food in Europe since ancient times.
Most probably the Helix were used as food, not for a ceremony.
Even today, if one wants to find the larger Helix in Europe, medieval ruins
of castles or monasteries are likely to shelter populations of the larger
Helicidae.
