As I’ve indicated in my presentations of S. alatus and S. pugilis and our previous discussions, despite 40 years of combined collecting by Phil Poland and myself on both sides of Florida, we have documented no living populations of S. pugilis except at Palm Beach County.  All specimens I’ve seen from other locations thought to be S. pugilis were just unusual S. alatus or could not be confirmed with confidence as with accurate location data.

Thank you, this is a start. Just another day in paradise. Hope I have time for this. Add another year to the book. 😢

Thanks Steve,

That's where much-needed data cleaning comes into play, or not. Most likely pesky noise inherent to a collection that includes 129,500 lots, of which 102 are Strombus pugilis and 276 are Strombus alatus (notice East vs West bias...). I really appreciate this type of feedback on the collection, please send comments directly to me at [log in to unmask].

This is interesting as I note that your readout shows at least 4
records from the Gulf Coast of Florida (St Petersburg, Goodland,
Sanibel)...some going back some 60-70 years)...I recently saw a pair
of Strombus pugilis from another similarly old collection date (1948)
for sale online with a stated locality of "Marco Island" and I
wondered if that data could be legitimate....have there indeed been
well-documnted finds of pugilis in that area?
