Aloha!

Can anyone enlighten me on the latest thinking regarding the biogeography of Cheilea? I am used to thinking of C. equestris (Linnaeus, 1758) as being circumtropical with questionable assignment of eastern Pacific specimens to C. cepacea (Broderip, 1834). A quick perusal of WoRMS suggests that the story has become more complicated than that. My specimens are all from the Caribbean, Gulf of California, Hawaii, and Guam. From what I have been able to ascertain, they are likely to be equestris, cepacea, and C. hipponiciformis (Reeve, 1858), respectively. I also notice three new species described in 2014 by Rolan and Fernandez-Garces.

Mahalo for any insights,

John Bell
