Dear colleagues,

CIRAD (the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development) is hiring, for a permanent position, an IT engineer in charge of the tropical crop modelling platform.

Job description

Attached to the “Agro-Ecology & Sustainable Intensification of Annual Crops” Research Unit (RU AIDA), you will be responsible for the operational construction of a new tropical crop system modelling platform (soil-crop model ultimately including trees and perennial crops). The PERSYST department will chair the steering committee of the platform, which is intended to be cross-cutting for CIRAD research units.

Under the supervision of AÏDA’s management, you will establish suitable IT methods to meet the needs, the type of organisation and the management of the platform and you will manage the programming of activities. You will contribute to building an organisational architecture and technological methods suitable for meeting the needs of agricultural scientists in the various teams that use soil-crop modelling.
Your activities as a platform manager will be as follows:
1. Coordinating IT development after identifying the needs of the different units and teams.
2. Coordinating the unit’s human and material IT resources, including administering the GitLab repository.
3. Specific contribution to the IT development of the model codes and/or related tools (development and programming in various computer languages).
4. Advice to agricultural scientists/modelling specialists on the choice of IT techniques and methods that they can use independently.
5. Taking part in setting up projects, supporting PhD students and drawing up technical specifications for potential subcontractors and partners.

The PERSYST department and the AÏDA research unit have agricultural scientists/modelling specialists in their teams who are proficient in agricultural modelling, along with computer scientists who support them in their projects. As the platform manager, you will coordinate activities so that the models developed by Cirad can be scaled up on an international level.
You will start by getting to know the tools and methods that are already in operation and you will set up a diagnosis in order to establish a strategy for future technological choices and the organisational implementation of the platform.

The aim of the platform is to support researchers and PhD students (from developed and developing countries) in the effective use of soil-crop models, in particular to answer the following questions related to this field:
• What are the spatial impacts of ecological intensification techniques on adaptation to climate change and the sustainability of crop systems in developing countries?
• What are the best options for trade-offs between climate change adaptation and mitigation (carbon storage)?
• What aspects of climate and agricultural constraints explain the gap between actual production and the potential of tropical crops?
