TITLE:  Research Scientist - Crop Modelling and Statistics
 Duties may include:

  *   Develop, calibrate, and validate crop models using various data sources, including field experiments, remote sensing, and GIS data.
  *   Conduct statistical analyses to assess the performance of crop models and identify factors influencing crop growth and yield.
  *   Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate crop models with other models and decision support tools, such as climate, water, and nutrient management models.
  *   Analyze large-scale, multi-environment datasets to identify patterns, trends, and relationships between crop growth, yield, and management practices.
  *   Develop and implement data management protocols to ensure the integrity and security of research data.
  *   Ensure appropriate backup and storage of research data.
  *   Implement user-friendly databases and tools to optimize agricultural management practices.
  *   Prepare and present research findings to internal and external stakeholders through reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.
  *   Contribute to the development of decision support tools and recommendations for farmers, policymakers, and other stakeholders to optimize agricultural management practices.
  *   Participate in grant writing and funding proposals to secure research funding.
  *   Stay current with the latest research developments in crop modelling, statistics, and related fields and incorporate new findings and methodologies into research activities.
Responsibilities

  *   Participate in interdisciplinary research projects and collaborate with scientists from various disciplines, including agronomy, climate science, soil science, and remote sensing.
  *   Mentor and supervise students, postdoctoral researchers, and technical staff as needed.
  *   Contribute to the development of research proposals, progress reports, and project deliverables.
  *   Engage with stakeholders, including farmers, agricultural extension agents, industry partners, and policymakers, to promote the adoption of research findings and decision support tools.
  *   Attend and present research findings at national and international conferences, workshops, and other relevant events.
  *   Foster collaborations with other research institutions, universities, and industry partners to advance the state of the art in crop modeling, and agricultural decision support.
  *   Continuously seek opportunities to improve research methods and the quality of research output, and contribute to the overall reputation and impact of the organization.
  *   Promote a positive work environment that encourages collaboration, innovation, and professional development.
PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS
In the role of Research Scientist - Crop Modelling, the candidate will establish and maintain strong working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders to ensure successful execution of research projects and effective dissemination of valuable insights. Externally, they will actively engage with donor agencies, industry leaders, national coordinators from host project countries, and farmers in host countries. This engagement will involve gathering, relaying, and explaining critical information relevant to the research projects, as well as negotiating agreements, such as memorandums of understanding, when necessary. Internally, the candidate will collaborate closely with management and staff members to discuss and review project data or project status. This will involve sharing updates, addressing challenges, and aligning on objectives to foster a cooperative and productive working environment. By cultivating strong personal work relationships, the Research Scientist - Crop Modelling will contribute to the overall success of the team and the organization's research goals.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
 This position requires a significant amount of work to be performed in collaboration with other scientists and will involve travel to developing countries.

Required Experience
JOB REQUIREMENTS

  *    D. in Agronomy, Crop Science, Plant Physiology, Ecology, or a related field with a strong focus on crop modelling.
  *   Proven experience in developing, calibrating, and validating crop models, preferably using the DSSAT or similar crop modelling frameworks.
  *   Expertise in statistical methods.
  *   Proficiency in programming languages such as FORTRAN, SAS, and R, and experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) for spatial analysis and data visualization.
  *   Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  *   Strong record of peer-reviewed publications in crop modelling or related fields.
  *   Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, interdisciplinary research environment.
  *   Experience in grant writing and funding proposal development is a plus.
