The MARC Advisory Committee will be meeting virtually next Wednesday and
Thursday. Here are some of the discussion papers and proposals that may be
of interest to the cartographic community.

Proposal 2024-02 <https://www.loc.gov/marc/mac/2024/2024-02.html>
Refinement of Accessibility Field 341 in the MARC Bibliographic Format
This proposal expands the field definition and scope of field 341
(Accessibility Content) and allows for text in the $a Content access mode
from uncontrolled vocabularies.

Proposal 2024-04 <https://www.loc.gov/marc/mac/2024/2024-04.html> Adding
Subfield $5 to the Linking Entry Fields 773, 774, and 787 in the MARC
Bibliographic Format
This proposal will allow the addition of the subfield $5 (Institution to
which the field applies) to the linking fields 773 (Host Item Entry), 774
(Constituent Item Entry), and 787 (Other Relationship Entry). This will be
useful from materials that have been bound together by a particular library.

Discussion Paper 2024-DP01
<https://www.loc.gov/marc/mac/2024/2024-dp01.html> Adding Subfield $5 to
Field 580 in the MARC Bibliographic Format
This discussion paper explores the need for the addition of the subfield $5
(Institution to which the field applies) to field 580 (Linking Entry
Complexity Note). This will be useful from materials that have been bound
together by a particular library.

Discussion Paper 2024-DP02
<https://www.loc.gov/marc/mac/2024/2024-dp02.html> Adding Subfield $i to
Field 245 in the MARC Bibliographic Format
This discussion paper examines the possibility of adding subfield $i
(Source of transcribed title) to Field 245 (Title Statement) to indicate
the source of a transcribed title when the title contains harmful language
and the title is from a source not readily apparent to general users,
especially when the title proper is not from the title page. The map
example given includes the former name of a valley in California that was
changed because of a derogatory term in the former form of name.

The other proposals and discussion papers are of slighter interest than
these. The full agenda, with links to all the proposals and papers can be
found here <https://www.loc.gov/marc/mac/mw2024_age.html> If you have any
comments on any of the agenda items, please get them to me by Monday the
22nd.
