Maps, charts and plans were explicitly included with the statutory copyright regime in 1767. But long before this, mapmakers had sought to protect their market exclusivity using legal instruments such as privileges and patents, as well as regulation through guilds such as the Stationers’ Company. This talk explores these methods, the motives for using them, and their effectiveness, by focussing on the publication of three famous Britannias, those of Richard Blome, John Ogilby, and William Camden, in the seventeenth century. *** Future seminar in 2023-24: 7 May 2024, 5.30pm UK time Jana C Schuster, Historic England & New York University The cartographic commissions of John, 2nd Duke of Montagu (1690–1749) For enquiries, please contact Sarah Bendall at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>, tel. 01223 330476 Web page: https://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/collections/departments/maps/cartographic-events/camsem The seminars are kindly supported by Emmanuel College Cambridge Dr Sarah Bendall | Fellow & Development Director Emmanuel College Cambridge CB2 3AP Tel. 01223 330476 Emmanuel College Cambridge Registered Charity No: 1137456 The College’s Data Protection Statement for Emma members and friends is available at https://www.emma.cam.ac.uk/members/contact/data/
