Isabella Alexander is a professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Technology Sydney. She is the author of Copyright and Cartography: History, Law, and the Circulation of Geographical Knowledge (Hart, 2023).

Maps, charts and plans were explicitly included with the statutory copyright regime in 1767. But long before this, mapmakers had sought to protect their market exclusivity using legal instruments such as privileges and patents, as well as regulation through guilds such as the Stationers’ Company. This talk explores these methods, the motives for using them, and their effectiveness, by focussing on the publication of three famous Britannias, those of Richard Blome, John Ogilby, and William Camden, in the seventeenth century.
