From my understanding of phylogenetic order, Mollusks are ranked from lowest evolved to most evolved. Or, the dull ones come first and the smartest ones come last. I am sure I will be corrected, but that is what I understand. In the gastropods, at least. So, the limpets are less evolved than the Turrids. Within each group is the Family and then the Genus, then the species. Within the Superfamily, each Family is listed in alphabetical order, then Under the Families, each Genus is in alphabetical order and then within each Genus, the species are listed in alphabetical order. So, for Vicky to access WoRMS for every single species in her exhibit, it would take hours and hours,  and in the end, we would be visiting her in the loony bin, because just about the time she finished, someone would move something. OK listers, that is a basic explanation. If I am not correct, everyone will learn something. Carole Marshall

I am amazed. Why is an alphabetical listing not a tree? All ranks are available in MolluscaBase, from Phylum to species. Each (sub)species, (sub)genus, etc. is placed in the hierarchy. Whatever system you use, the hierarchy (the systematic ranking) will not differ. Ruud Bank

Dear Vicky: You can go to the Taxon Tree in MolluscaBase (or WoRMS), but everything is in alphabetical, rather than phylogenetic, order. https://www.molluscabase.org/aphia.php?p=browser Bob On Monday, March 18, 2024 at 09:06:45 AM EDT, Vicky Wall <[log in to unmask]> wrote:  I tried WoRMS but couldn't find where to navigate to see a listing of families similar to what is in some of my shell books. Vicky

Why not use WoRMS?

That is an old one and I know it is somewhat outdated, but that is the last PUBLISHEDversion. Many others have their own views and very probably they are correct, but none has been PUBLISHED. I took mine and numbered the families. Zebinidae has historically been part of the Rissoinidae but is a fairly new family (not in Turgeon), Since it is still in the superfamily Rissoininae, and the listings are alphabetical within the group, deal accordingly. (p 70 Turgeon) Vermetidae is on p. 81. Aplysiidae is on p 122, after the paper bubbles. Ellobiidae is on p 132 after the nudibranchs. So basically Bob's order corresponds to that of Turgeon. Carole Marshall
