Interestingly enough, one of the principle barriers to long life is the printed matter opposite the data. It seems the inks can migrate in the plastic and attacked the metal surface. There is also lots of info available about how to measure CD ROM decay. But they are pretty near forever (about as good as acid free paper, I would guess).
