----------------------------Original message---------------------------- Betsy - I would like to echo the concerns re dropping coordinates expressed by Phil Hoehn & Linda Zellmer. I believe it is extremely short-sighted of us to do this when the data is easily available on many maps. I feel certain that coordinates will be needed with graphic indexing programmes which are of course here but perhaps not commercially viable right now (e.g. PC CaRTONET). I agree with Phil that if it seems onerous we could record it in 034 and not in Tag 255 (this may be a sensible revision anyway). I hope we in the AACR2 community will not throw the baby out with the bathwater without further discussion. And what about the revision to CARTOGRAPHIC MATERIALS. This should be discussed in this context before a decision is made particularly when LC is responsible for editing the revised edition of that manual. Betsy - you at LC may find this labour- intensive but the impact on the community and all those who use your derived records could be devastating. Is a compromise possible ?
