Small Blue Planet, an adventure of our planet, has three modules to explore in both the Windows and Macintosh versions. Both the Global Relief and the USA Relief Maps depict land formations, plate tectonics, volcanology, meteorology, oceanography, glaciation and more. The World Political Map, updated as of March 1993, includes information on the recently formed countries of Slovakia, The Czech Republic and Macedonia. Using an insert map feature, users can simultaneously view both the Relief Maps and the corresponding Political Maps. These maps are synchronized, so as users cruise across geographical formations, the political boundaries change. Previously released for the Macintosh, Small Blue Planet also contains The Gallery module, showing several collections of remotely sensed imagery and breathtaking photographs taken during Space Shuttle and other NASA missions. These collections depict both sublime geological formations and outstanding man-made effects. For example, a Visible Spectrum DMSP Satellite image of night illumination shows a revealing portrait of artificial light. Users can join scientists in discovering previously hidden archaeological footprints only now being detected with the use of satellite technology, such as the ghost of ancient camel trails faintly appearing in the Desert of Oman. "Small Blue Planet shows real pictures, not line drawings," said Eleesa Hager, Now What Software's director of design. "This electronic atlas captures a more intimate and revealing perspective of our planet, in a way unattainable by books with static pictures and facts." Small Blue Planet conveys the splendor of Earth as seen from space as well as the fragile, delicate balance of our planet, a perspective that can only be gained from the vantage point of an electronic satellite atlas. Some of the images unveil the abrupt and disturbing changes that the Earth is undergoing - the shrinking shoreline of the Aral Sea, the burning rain forests of Brazil, the oil fires of the Middle East and the extent of clear cutting in the Pacific Northwest. Computer-generated maps also reveal the size of the hole in the ozone layer above Antarctica. Through a simple to use, point and click interface, users can quickly circumnavigate the globe or zoom in on areas of special interest by clicking on either a spinning globe or a compass icon. "Because of the demand for added zoom capabilities, we have added a whole new level of zoom to some of the major metropolitan areas," said James McMullen, director of research and development. "You can't see your own shadow, but you can see the shadow of the Bay Bridge on the San Francisco Bay." Almost all images can be printed and used in other applications by simply cutting and pasting them into any drawing software. More than 500 annotations supply valuable information and clues to exploring this treasure of images. Users can add their own annotations to images with a note-taking tool. In addition to the three maps and the satellite image gallery, Small Blue Planet also contains The Chronosphere(tm), which sets the patterns of night and day in synch with a moving globe and tells users the time anywhere in the world. The Small Blue Planet: The Electronic Satellite Atlas(tm) has been written for speed, allowing users to move around big images quickly, even on small machines. The CD-ROM has been packed with 639 megabytes. It requires a 12-inch monitor, 8 bit monitor, 4 MB RAM minimum, and a mouse. The Windows and Macintosh versions are $79.95 each. Now What Software specializes in developing geographic multi-media products. Future releases will include other Maps That Move(tm) educational titles dealing with geography, science and history.
