        Karen & MAPS-L:

You mention USGS series. Do you mean topographic or
geologic/hedrographic? i.e., the infamous I, GP, GQ, MF series.
Hanging files? Hanging vertical file cabinet Pendaflex-like
hanging files (8 1/2 X 11)? or the LARGE Ulrich Planfiles which can
        store USGS topo quads?

If you mean the folded geologic maps, I don't think you'll save any
more room by any other method than vertical file cabinets.
However, there are those who swear by the Ulrich planfiles (Joanne
Perry at Oregon State - Covallis and Chris Ziegler - University of
Arizona). They may save space but one is always explaining to the
public how to open the drawers. That's one thing with
Hamiltion/Mayline flat cases you never have to do.
