----------------------------Original message---------------------------- As Chair of the MAGERT membership Committee, I would like to invite you to become a member of MAGERT, the Map and Geography Round Table of the American Library Association (ALA). MAGERT puts on programs of interest to map librarians at the annual conference of ALA, produces a newsletter, _base line_, which includes such useful information as a column on map cataloging, a list of recently-published maps, information on MAGERT programs and meetings, employment opportunities in map librarianship, information of interest to small map collections, current government activities, and news of recent events in map librarianship. MAGERT also produces a semi-annual scholarly journal _Meridian_, which explores, through refereed articles and reviews, maps as contemporary tools, historical documents, and important resources in today's libraries. MAGERT also publishes the _Occasional Paper_ series, which includes titles of interest to map librarians, geographers, historians, and the general reader; the _Open File Reports_, which are on a series of useful and timely topics and are available for a nominal fee; and the _Circular_ series on such topics as a manual for making cartographic citations. Map librarianship is a very small and specialized field, so map librarians are a cohesive support group, and because MAGERT is such a small round table, it is easy to become a member of a MAGERT committee. I believe that you will find there are many advantages to becoming a member of MAGERT. If you are already a member of ALA, your dues are only an additional fifteen dollars for all the benefits of MAGERT. If you would like a membership brochure or have questions about MAGERT, please do not reply to this message, but send a message to my e-mail address ([log in to unmask]) instead. Katherine L.
