----------------------------Original message---------------------------- How do other map libraries with USGS maps (govcdocs) access them? More specifically, do you catalog them and if so by the title of the series, the state, or each individual sheet?. We have a complete set of USGS maps which are not cataloged and they are checked out manually. The 7.5's which are most heavily used are filed by the state and then alphabetically by the title of each sheet. Other USGS topos are filed by the series and then by the alphabetically by title. The USGS thematic maps are also filed by the series and then numerically. So far they seem easy for students to use as all files and shelves are labelel and all the series have either a map index or a data base in bok or CD-ROM form. There is a concern that if a record is created for each individual map the database would be more confusing than helpful. I am thinking a main record for the series title would be most helpful for circulation. We could cat. individually our own state. Any suggestions?
