According to John Snyder in *Flattening the Earth* (U. Chicago Press, 1993,
ISBN 0-226-76746-9) p. 160:

"... was immodestly named the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) grid
and projection system by the U.S. Army Map Service in the late 1940's."

See also U.S. Dept. of the Army, 1973, "Universal Transverse Mercator
Grid", TM 5-241-8.

I can't find a USA ref circa 1940 although TM 5-241 may have an
earlier edition from that period.
