----------------------------Original message---------------------------- A patron is writing about the American 4th Infantry Division in France during World War II and needs help interpreting some information in military logs she has obtained. The logs, dated 24-28 August 1944, refer to "Map of France 1/25,000" and what she believes to be coordinates, examples of which are 000254, 885154, and 886154. Then there is reference to "Map of France 1/50,000" with coordinates (?) such as 000250, 040224, 050240, 139402, and 236445. The patron says that the area would be Bruyeres-le-Chatel, Bois de Vincennes, Chelles, Courtry, and Mitry-Mory. We of course can find those places on other maps of France, but we are at a loss to know if the numbers mentioned above are really coordinates, and if so, where exactly are they relative to these towns in France? Can anyone help interpret this information? Jane Carlson Map Collection Assistant University of Iowa [log in to unmask]
