We have been having problems with our subscriber list, and were not sure whether it went to everyone at that time. Please excuse any duplication. Format Integration Update In late May, the Library of Congress announced the anticipated distribution of records with a blank value (ASCII '20') in the second indicator of fields 700, 710, 711, and 730 as part of the phased approach to format integration. The announcement stated that subscribers could anticipate this change in mid-June. However, in order to give systems adequate time to accommodate this change, the Library of Congress has decided to wait until mid-July before distributing records with the new 7XX second indicator value. As stated in the announcement, the Library of Congress is implementing format integration internally in stages. The first records to contain this change will be Books records and they will start appearing in mid-July. The next group will be Music, Visual Materials, and Computer files in August, followed by Maps in September, and Serials and the JACKPHY files later in the fall. The first distribution issue for each group will contain a notice so that users are aware of this change. As a result of the format integration changes in fields 700, 710, 711 and 730, both values 'blank' (No information provided) and '2' (Analytical entry) will be valid values. Institutions can expect to receive records with either of these values. Values '0' (Alternative entry) and '1' (Secondary entry) will be made obsolete and will generally only appear in redistributed records initially created before the new changes were installed. As previously announced, the first phase of format integration will encompass completion of the additions and changes to the variable data fields, tags 010 through 8XX. The 1992 edition of Format Integration and its Effect on the USMARC Bibliographic Format (and its addendum dated September 15, 1993) contains a listing of all the affected variable data fields. In addition, the new edition of the USMARC Format for Bibliographic Data with the integrated variable fields is now available from the the Cataloging Distribution Service. Phase 1 is to be completed by December 31, 1994. Phase 2 will include changes to the Leader and to control fields, 006, 007, and 008; it is scheduled to be completed in 1995. The Cataloging Distribution Service expects to offer test files containing format integration records with variable field data in fall 1994. Their availability will be announced.
