----------------------------Original message---------------------------- I haven't seen anything about the DRG survey on MAPS-L, and the deadline for selection is August 4, 1995, so here's some information about it. This message will primarily be of interest to depository libraries and more generally to users of USGS topographic maps. Libraries participating in the Federal Depository Library program are currently being surveyed for selection of USGS-produced Digital Raster Graphics (DGR) on CD-ROM. You may want to talk with your local depository librarian about these to find out about whether DRGs will be available locally or regionally. The survey states: This survey offers the Digital Raster Graphics (DRG) for depository distribution. A (DGR) is a scanned image of a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) topographic map. The scanned image includes all map collar information. The image inside the map neatline is georeferenced to the surface of the Earth. The DRG can be used to collect, review, and revise other digital data, especially digital line graphs (DLG). The DRG can be combined with other digital products, such as the digital orthophotoquadrangles (DOQ) or the digital elevation models (DEM) to provide additional visual information. The USGS plans to produce DRGs of the 1:24,000, 1:100,000, and 1:250,000 scale topographic map series beginning with the 1:24,000 scale 7.5 minute quadrangles. Additional information can be obtained on the World Wide Web at http://mcmcweb.cr.usgs.gov/ The CDs will contain the necessary software to run the discs. The complete set of 7.5' 1:24,000 scale maps is expected to consist of approximately 900 CDs. Libraries must respond to the survey by August 4, 1995 to be eligible to receive DRGs in Fiscal Year 1996.
