In particular, it focuses on issues and agendas relevant to developing countries. The primary objective of the symposium is to promote interests in geoinformatic research and applications on regional and global development and to foster the linkages between researchers and practitioners from developing countries and the western world. While maintaining the general themes of the conference, GEOINFORMATICS'96 will concentrate on the applications of geographic information technology in environmental management as well as regional and urban development. The following topics are suggested for the symposium and other topics are also welcome. * Applications Disaster warning and reduction Damage assessment of hazards Monitoring, modeling, and controlling environmental pollution Ecosystem monitoring and ecological modeling Environmental health: monitoring, modeling, and controlling epidemics Emergency response in urban and rural areas Assessment of investment environment, location allocation Network planning and management Urban and regional planning and management Cost and benefit analysis of GIS projects Sharing spatial information: institutional and technical issues * Development Education programs National Spatial Data Infrastructure User-oriented system development Group decision support systems Systems integration Expert systems and artificial intelligence Distributed processing Simulation of spatial processes * Research Multidimensional, multiscale, multimedia GIS Spatial statistics and error assessment in GIS On-line Complex Processing and high performance spatial data server Transmission and compression of spatial data Genetic programming and exploratory analysis of spatial data Integration of Remote Sensing and GIS GPS Spatial data models Generalization The conference program consists of an opening session, technical sessions, panel discussions, and a closing session. A series of workshops will be arranged on environmental management and transportation in the first day of the conference. In addition, there will be technical tours on the GIS facilities in the SFWMD and nearby areas. The conference will also organize several social events. SUBMISSIONS The program will be established by an international program committee. Authors are requested to submit abstracts, in English, outlining the research or application problems, methodological or technical design, and project results. Each abstract should contain no more than 500 words and should include the title of the paper, name of the authors, affiliation, telephone and fax number, and email address. Authors with abstracts selected to the program should prepare a camera-ready paper to be included in the proceedings. LOCATION The West Palm Beach area is located on the famous "Florida Treasure Coast", an environment with breathtaking natural beauty and an abundance of cultural activities. It is one of the most desirable tourist and vacation areas in the US. SFWMD has one of the most advanced GIS facilities among US government agencies and is a leader in GIS applications in water and environmental management.
