BACKGROUND CIMMYT is an internationally funded, nonprofit research and training organization headquartered in Mexico and affiliated with the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The Center's mission is to help the poor in developing countries by increasing the productivity, profitability and sustainability of maize- and wheat-based systems while protecting natural resources. THE POSITION The Soils Scientist will have responsibilities related to research and training, service and facilitation, and management and representation. The Soils Scientist will report to the Manager of the NRG. Research The Soils Scientist will be expected to plan and execute a program of strategic soils science research within an integrated approach to natural resources management research (NRMR). This research should be undertaken in collaboration with NRG staff, should relate to maize- or wheat-based systems in developing countries, and should: - Contribute to an improved understanding of fundamental processes of resource degradation and/or stagnating productivity. - Result in improved methods for soils science research within an integrated approach to NRMR that features a systems perspective and is suitable for use by national agricultural research systems. - Contribute to the development and testing of prototype technologies that may have widespread application in helping improve the productivity and sustainability of well-defined maize- and wheat-based systems. Service, Facilitation, and Training The Soils Scientist also will be expected to fulfill a service, facilitation, and training function, aimed particularly at CIMMYT outreach scientists and their research partners. The selected scientist should: - Provide disciplinary support and backstopping in soils science to CIMMYT staff (and their research partners) working in NRMR, especially outreach staff working with systemwide or ecoregional initiatives, or with regional networking projects. - Facilitate suitable linkages between CIMMYT/ partner NRMR activities, local soil science research institutions, and advanced research institutes. - Help upgrade the technical skills of NARS visiting scientists through collaboration in Mexico-based NRMR projects, and by helping with training programs dealing with advanced research methods; - Facilitate the sharing of information among CIMMYT scientists and their research partners relative to soils science within the broader NRMR process. Management and Representation Finally, the scientist will be expected to help supervise and evaluate consultants supporting CIMMYT's NRMR endeavors; help obtain funding for CIMMYT's NRMR activities; represent CIMMYT in selected external fora dealing with NRMR; and be a contact person for visitors and visiting scientists. QUALIFICATIONS Essential qualifications for the Soils Scientist are as follows: a Ph.D. in soil science; a minimum of five years' professional experience; an outstanding scientific record including a strong publications record; expertise in soil, water, nutrient, crop and/or systems modeling; a demonstrated ability to conduct research with a systems perspective; a commitment to collaboration with scientists from other disciplines; a willingness to travel extensively; excellent spoken and written English language competence; and a demonstrated ability to attract competitive research grants from external funding bodies. In addition, the following qualifications are highly desirable: an acquaintance with the development and use of geographic information systems; an acquaintance with ecological or environmental studies; spoken and written Spanish language competence.
