This message was sent to Maps-L by Vanette Schwartz of the Honors and Awards Committee of the G&M Division, SLA.-----Johnnie -------------------------------------- PRESS RELEASE Honors Award for Outstanding Achievement in Geography and Map Librarianship The Honors and Awards Committee, Geography and Map Division, Special Libraries Association is pleased to announce that Alice C. Hudson, Chief of the Map Division at New York Public Library, is the recipient of the Division's Honors Award for Outstanding Achievement in Geography and Map Librarianship. The award was presented to Ms. Hudson at the Special Libraries Association 87th annual conference held in Boston, Massachusetts from June 8-13, 1996. The Honors Award, first presented in 1955, is the highest award given by the Geography and Map Division of the Special Libraries Association. The award recognizes a person who has made outstanding contributions to the fields of geography, cartography, or map librarianship. This year marks the 28th time the award has been given. Ms. Hudson is one of only three people who have received both the Special Libraries Association and the American Library Association awards for outstanding contributions to map librarianship. Alice Hudson received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969 from Middle Tennessee State University. In 1970 she received her Masters degree in Library Science from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. She has continued her education with additional coursework in geography and librarianship at Columbia University, as well as completing the Association of Research Libraries, Management Skills Institute in 1983. Ms. Hudson began her professional career as map cataloger and reference librarian at the New York Public Library in 1970. In 1978 she was appointed Assistant Chief of the Map Division at New York Public Library. She was named to her current position as Chief of the Map Division in 1981. Throughout her career Ms. Hudson has been an active leader in professional organizations and a frequent presenter at map and library conferences. She served as chair of the New York City Geography and Map Group from 1975 to 1977, and was President of the New York Map Society in l980. In 1982-83 she was elected chair of the Map and Geography Round Table of the American Library Association. Ms. Hudson has also been active in the Geography and Map Division of the Special Libraries Association, serving as chair of the division in 1993-94. In addition to her professional service, Ms. Hudson has also been active in editing and writing. She served as editor of the Rhumb line newsletter from 1985-1990, was a regional editor for the 1985 edition of Guide to United States Map Resources and served on the editorial board of Meridian from 1988-1992. She has authored numerous articles and book reviews for professional journals including The Map Collector, Geography and Map Division Bulletin, Special Libraries, Meridian, Science & Technology Libraries, and the Information Bulletin of the Western Association of Map Libraries. For her energetic work in the profession, Ms. Hudson was honored with the New York Public Library's Special Performance Award in 1986, and with the American Library Association Map and Geography Round Table Honors Award in 1990. ========================================================================= ===========
