In that situation, yes - map case contents can remain in drawers. There is a quarter inch upper lip for each drawer your painters should not overlook and can be done without any overspray to map drawer contents. - PML ------------------------------------------------------- >Date: Wed, 14 Aug 1996 15:12:37 +0100 >From: [log in to unmask] (April Carlucci) >Subject: Re: refinishing map cases ---------------------------Original message---------------------------- The Library has had filing cabinets refinished successfully without unloading the contents, and is now asking me if this is an option for 15 map cases which contain our USGS topos. My initial response was no! but I said that I would check. with other map libraries. This is cosmetic refinishing. Only the exterior will be refinished as the cases (Hamilton 7J15s -15 drawer units) are only 15 years old and in good condition. They are being refinished to match the color of cases ordered for our new building. Guess our "old" hue was discontinued and out of fashion! Any comments appreciated. Maureen Farrell Cleveland Public Library Map Collection [log in to unmask] While the Library has already had success refinishing map cabinets without removing the contents, and I have heard of maps in similar cases surviving floods, the idea still sends a chill down my spine! I'd suggest explaining to the administrators how much it will cost to replace the maps if it doesn't work so well this time! ********************************************************************** April Carlucci [log in to unmask] The British Library Voice +44 171 412 7000x4167 Map Library +44 171 412 7703 Great Russell Street Fax +44 171 412 7780 London WC1B 3DG United Kingdom "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!" **********************************************************************
