If you don't need extreme accuracy, you can use a simple hydrometer made
for use in salt water aquariums and available from any good aquarium supply
store. The one I have is called SeaTest and consists of a rectangular
plastic container about 10 cm. in maximum dimension, containing a
swivelling plastic pointer/float that indicates specific gravity on a scale
of 1.017 to 1.027, the usual range of seawater. It is quite durable and
would be easy to pack and use.
