I would be very grateful for any information on finds (particularly in the British Isles) of remains of the shellfish used to produce red-purple dye. I am thinking principally of Muricidae and Thaididae: Murex trunculus L. Murex brandaris L. Hexaplex trunculus L. Bolinus brandaris L. Nucella lapillus L. Purpura lapillus Purpura haemastome I would be especially interested if the shells have been broken deliberately at the pointed end: this indicates selective removal of the dye-precursor producing gland - implying that it was not just collected for food. A picture of such a broken shell would be even better.
