Second Announcement: 8 April, 1999 The International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC), in collaboration with the University of Georgia, University of Florida, University of Hawaii, University of Guelph, and International Consortium for Agricultural Systems Applications (ICASA), is organizing the 11th Annual International Training Program on Computer Simulation of Crop Growth and Management Responses at Muscle Shoals, Alabama, during May 17-28, 1999. In this training program, participants will learn how a comprehensive simulation model of crop growth and development and water and nutrient dynamics is constructed and how it can be applied to real world problems. Specifically, the program will focus on: First Week Introduction to DSSAT Simulating potential production Genetic coefficients for growth and development Simulating water-limited conditions Simulating water and N-limited conditions Second Week Experimentation and assembling input data Evaluating risk and Sustainability Case study and experimental data Spatial variability and GIS Model applications Case Study: Participants using their own soils, crop and climate data will utilize DSSAT to analyze and identify production systems and management strategies that are biophysically and socioeconomically productive, sustainable and environmentally friendly. Such studies could be done for the following crops: cereals, grain legumes, root and tubers, sugarcane, and sunflower. Space in the workshop is limited to 30 participants. Applicants will be accepted on a first come first serve basis. Invited faculty includes: James W. Jones, Distinguished Professor, Ag Engineering University of Florida Kenneth Boote, Professor of Agronomy University of Florida Tony Hunt, Professor, Crop Science University of Guelph Gerrit Hoogenboom, Professor, Ag Engineering University of Georgia Julio Henao, Senior Scientist - Biometrician IFDC Upendra Singh, Senior Systems Modeler/Soil fertility specialist IFDC Paul Wilkens, Systems Modeler/Programmer IFDC A brochure and enrollment form is attached to this message. To apply, complete the enrollment form and preferably fax or e-mail it to IFDC by May 1, 1999. Registration will be made on a first come first serve basis.
