Nuclei for pearl culture has been manufactured over the last 100 years out o=
f many different types of source materials. Almost all materials used(ie: =
Bone, Lead, Mantel Tissue, ect.) can be coated with nacre by the pearl oyste=
r to some extent. This is evident today by the ablity of the Chinese to cult=
ure large amounts of seed pearls using mantel tissue as nuclei. =0D
It was found by K. Mikimoto in the late 1890's that the shell of the fres=
hwater mussel , especially those from the United States possesed almost the =
same qualities as the mother of pearl produced by the pearl oyster. He foun=
d that the Calcium Crystal structure and specific gravity of nucleus produce=
d from the freshwater mussel was almost identical, therefore making this ma=
terial most suitable for culture. It was Mikimoto's objective to develope a =
method of producing a man made pearl that was identical to a natural pearl =
in appearence and substance in order that pearls would be more affordable to =
the masses of people . His process of culturing was then and is today a pat=
iented process which is held to be a national treasure in Japan. =0D
Much of the reason freshwater mussels are still used today, is because th=
e process is so entrenched in history, that few of the Japanese pearl cultur=
e techs that implant world wide today( and the number of techs that implant =
is still dominated by Japanese) will change for fear that by altering the =
Mikimoto's process and the process that they have been taught by their fathe=
rs , that they will produce an inferior pearl. It is this respect for trad=
ition that has kept the freshwater mussel in demand for nucleus materal.=0D
