Hello all I have only just seen the correspondence regarding Conus terminus - I both bought and found several at Tulear, Southern Madagascar, a few years ago. They are very distinctive, with a violet tone - quite abeautiful shell I haven't got Walls' book with me here, but I remember thinking when I saw it that his Conus gubernator is not the same at all. There are several species where he seems to differ from everyone else. Incidentally, I bought one by accident from a Cebu shell dealer, who told me it came from the Philippines - I'm sure it doesn't Regards Richard Parker >From: Guido Poppe <[log in to unmask]> >Reply-To: Conchologists of America List <[log in to unmask]> >To: [log in to unmask] >Subject: Re: Conus terminus >Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 10:37:40 +0000 > >Hello, > >I'm not a cone expert, but seeing thousands of them, here my humble >opinion: > >C. terminus in general comes from Sri Lanka, and it is definitely different >from C. gubernator, with a range restricted tot he western part of the >Indian Ocean. >About the validity of the name: I' didn't check the original description. >But both taxa are different for sure. > >Guido > >Visit Conchology, with over 50000 names with author, 3800 indicated type >species, 5000 conchological images, and fun with shells. > >http://www.conchology.uunethost.be/ > ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
