Eduardo is right; electronic indices are more effective than paper ones.
They can also be generated semiautomatically from electronic documents,
although I am told that they do require a substantial amount of human
intervention to yield a good result. (Does anyone have advice on which
software to use?) The editors of any recent journal certainly have all of
the articles in electronic form, so a volunteer could arrange with them to
index a few years' worth of magazine. The index would be publishable in
either paper or electronic form. Want to see your name in print?

Apologies to unamused Conchlers for the recent jokes--I sometimes get a bit
"happy" on painkillers. The tooth will come out on Monday. I envy Eduardo,
who can have dental attention without waiting for weeks first!
