Nobody who knows me could ever describe me as a typical wearer of neck-ties,
but for years I have been searching tie-shops for one that might have
cartographic relevance. And then, at the CoastGIS conference in Halifax,
Nova Scotia last week, a colleague gave me a wonderful neck-tie, which
displays in full-colour part of the official Admiralty navigation chart of
the Scilly Isles (off south-west England for those who can't locate them). I
believe the tie was originally produced and given out as promotional
material by a manufacturer of hydrographic sounding equipment - Kelvin
Hughes I think.

Also on the subject of Cartifacts, Margaret Wilkes at the National Library
of Scotland in Edinburgh used to maintain a wonderful collection of such
items, ranging from umbrellas with maps printed on them to beer mats to
pens, paper bags, clothing, etc. I believe Margaret has recently retired -
does anyone know what happened to her collection? Is it still being
maintained?

Darius
