Richard,
of course, you are right....but the digital realm has altered the playing
field a little...maybe too much one way, maybe not enough.....

for example, as a map librarian...have you ever had to alter a chunk of
geospatial data to "make" it work ? if yes, then...are you not moving into
the GIS technician area?

YEs, the "and others" you note are career cartographers (some of my old
profs too:-).....but Goodchild (in 1999 at ICA) also raised the questions
about how we can define people or roles or jobs...and how difficult it can
become when we cross boundaries in the digital realm (heck...i've been
knownm to make some paper maps the "old fashioned way" too :-)

this also relates to the issue/question i raised earlier....*some* of us
are libs, some labs, some libratories :-)

but i do agree...you are right...a clear distinction can and should be
made.....i just sent the list out because i personally found it
funny...how it happened just as i was thinking about the future and how we
define ourselves :-)....i'm not a geographer, i'm not a cartographer, i'm
not a map librarian, i'm not an archivist, i'm not a GIScientist.....
so...what am i??????

:-)
james
