Assistant Documents Librarian & Assistant Professor

The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) invites applications and
nominations for the position of Assistant Documents Librarian in the
Documents, Maps, Microforms Department. This tenure track position,
under the supervision of the Documents Librarian, will work in a
dynamic professional environment that delivers government information
through a variety of traditional and innovative services. This
includes a single public service desk, technical processing units, as
well as online reference services, bibliographic instruction, and
graduate seminars.  It has six librarians, eight staff, and
approximately 8 student workers. The department manages depository
agreements for both Federal and Illinois programs, collects in the
area of local government information, and is an active Geographic
Information Center for Illinois.

Environment and University Setting: The University Library serves a
multicultural community of students, staff, and faculty in an urban
environment.  UIC is the largest institution of higher learning in
the Chicago area, one of 88 Research I universities in the United
States, and an increasingly significant center for education,
research, and public service.  It serves more than 24,000 students
(approximately 66% undergraduate, 34% graduate and professional
degree students); and employs 11,000 full-time faculty and staff.

Responsibilities: Drawing upon an active role in the department's
traditional strengths in reference service, instruction, assistance
in the use of electronic resources, and collection development, the
successful candidate will be expected to be a participant in several
ground-breaking government information projects. These seek to
establish new levels of research and service on how urban academic
libraries and government agencies can cooperate to deliver government
information to individuals throughout the region, state, nation, and
the world. These include:

… DOSFAN, the U.S. Department of State Foreign Affairs Network,
… ERC, Electronic Research Collection, the first and only Federal
Electronic Depository Library set up in cooperation with a federal
executive agency and the U.S. Government Printing Office
… U.S. Department of Energy Electronic Public Reading Room for the
Argonne Labs.
… Chicago Community Fact Book

In addition, this position will interact with other faculty members
and staff in the department to further enhance existing projects and
develop others related to government information and electronic
information. The successful candidate will also be expected to
participate in Library-wide committees and task forces, as well as
related planning activities.  Evenings, weekend & holiday hours
required.



Minimum Qualifications:  Masters degree from a program accredited by
the American Library Association; two years professional experience
with government information resources and programs in an academic
library or equivalent professional experience.  Ability to
communicate logically, clearly, and efficiently; evidence of
professional involvement within academic librarianship; ability to
meet university standards in research, publication, and professional
service commensurate with tenure.

Additional Desirable Qualifications:  Knowledge of or interest in
HTML, GIS, and other electronic resources; experience with
cartographic information.

Salary/Rank/Contract: Tenure track; salary and rank dependent upon
qualifications and experience; faculty status; entry level faculty
appointments in the UIC Library begin at $38,000; twelve month
appointment with 24 days vacation; 12 days annual sick leave with
additional disability benefits; 11 paid holidays; medical insurance
(contribution based on annual salary; coverage for dependents may be
purchased); two dental plans available; life insurance paid for by
the State; participation in one of the State Universities Retirement
System compulsory (8% of salary is withheld and is tax exempt until
withdrawal); no Social Security coverage but Medicare payment is
withheld; physical examination at University Health Service is
required upon appointment.
