Here at Purdue we also match map circulation to book circulation time, 3
week loans for all categories of user. We do have several 'hot items'
that we keep for library use only along with pre-1900 maps.

We have a 2-week loan period for undergrads and 4 weeks for faculty,
grads and staff. Everyone can renew online.

Faculty can check out general library materials for 4 months, but I feel
that if you need a map that long, you should buy your own copy.

The Evergreen State College is setup differently than most colleges and
universities because their programs are all interdisciplinary. The same
professors and students stay with each other for at least two quarters.

As a result, circulation of titles at the library is by quarter. You can
check out a book for the entire quarter. If someone else needs it, the
title can be recalled. Therefore, our maps get checked out for an entire
quarter as well as our CD-ROMS/DVD-ROMS, videos, etc. The only item that
doesn't get circulated are microfiche but even that I will sometimes
interlibrary loan because maybe the title has more pagination than
allowed for us to print and send to a library.

Yes, there have been times when a topographic map has gotten lost or a
nautical chart gotten wet because someone actually used it for
navigation (lately I've been thinking of laminating the WA State
nautical charts for that reason) but I've been able to find replacements
via Needs & Offers through government documents depositories. Sometimes
the patron will offer to buy it and replace it for us (it is a lot
cheaper than the fine they get). Overall, though, it has worked out well
for us.

Hi Katie:

At the University of Arizona, we circulate maps for 3 weeks, whether
undergraduate, graduate, faculty, community user. Pre-1940 or
rare/fragile maps do not circulate (most of those maps were moved to
Special Collections when we reorganized). Most of our cd's are in the
regular circulating collection -- 3 weeks for undergraduates, 6 months
for faculty/grad students. If a CD is in the Map Collection, such as the
Atlas of Oregon they do not circulate (our books in the collection,
mainly atlases do not circulate). Our globes and relief models circulate
for 2 hours (assuming that people wanted to use them as part of a
presentation).

Here at the University of Colorado at Boulder, we circulate most of our
maps for 14 days. (Pre-1950 or rare/fragile maps do not circulate. CDs
circulate for 2 days.) We are considering changing the circulation
period for faculty/staff/grad students to 4 weeks. What do those of you
who have circulating collections do?

Thank you.
Katie
