Subject: RE: MAPS-L: Rand McNally non-road map dating system question
Date: Friday, 20 May 2005
From: Maura O'Connor <[log in to unmask]>

Dear all
The following are notes we have had for years regarding the Rand McNally
code for dating their maps:

. The leading 2 digits basically correlate to the edition date. A 79 or
80 respectively will tell that they last updated this map in 1979 or
1980.
. The next two numbers of digits tell what year they compiled or drafted
this map as a new map. Therefore, a 67 would equate to 1967.
. The next two numbers of digits tell how many maps they completed new
during a given year. A 40 tells that this is the 40th map they produced
during 1967.
. The last two digits after the hyphen tells how many times they entered
the map elements to revise the map.

Yours sincerely

Susan,

Please do share any findings you get with us, I have seen a couple of
copies of these maps in recent years too and I believe I dated them at
the "questionable decade" level by looking at names of specific
countries in Africa, Asia, and Europe. Hopefully there is a key to the
alphanumeric code though, that would make our lives much easier!

Paige

p.s. See you in Chicago!
