Hello~!
Great question! The Road Maps and the Wall Maps for Rand McNally &
Company are coded differently.
The wall maps are complicated as the number is assigned depending on the
product, the customer, the revision, whether or not it was a manually
produced map or a digital produced map etc.
The map Susan asks about was originally assigned in February 1998 and
probably printed in March 1998.
The system is a combination of Dbase (beginning early 1990) and 3x5
cards - (back to the beginning and still used). We have talked about
computerizing the system and making it available for cataloguers. We
are still discussing how to do this efficiently.
In the meanwhile, if you have the alphacode, please feel free to contact
me or Bob Argersinger who assigns the codes. We will be more than happy
to manually look up the code.

I can share also a couple of excellent online resources in this area
that are part of the Western Association of Map Libraries' (WAML) map
cataloging toolbox under "Cataloging & Processing." These are under the
subheader titled "Map Dates: Date Codes for Road Maps" with a link to
them called "Map Date Codes." The webpage is compiled by Phil Hoehn with
a list of links to 15 specific resources by name of company or agency.
Rand McNally is one of them. Clicking on the Rand McNally link takes you
to two resources, the first one is the "Road Map Society Collectors of
America" link, that takes you to the document "Dating Rand and Gousha
Maps" with an extremely useful lookup table, and the second of which is
"Interpreting Rand [McNally date] Codes" compiled by Jeff Roehnker. This
second document has a good explanation of how the parts of the codes
work and have changed over the years, with examples.
However, these resources don't help with the original question that
Susan posted, and that is a much longer alphanumeric code found on some
very recent world maps done by Rand. These codes are far different than
the one for the road maps done for decades by Rand, and there is no
obvious date embedded in the code. I do hope that someone at the
Newberry can enlighten us map catalogers about this specific code.
