Date: Tue, 24 May 2005 10:58:30 -0400
From: "Jane Read" <[log in to unmask]>

Please distribute this job advertisement to qualified graduates with
community-based GIS skills. I speak from experience when I say that the
Syracuse community partners are a fun bunch of folks to work with!
Thanks, Jane.

NEW YORK, SYRACUSE 13244. The Syracuse University Department of
Geography, in collaboration with community partners, invites
applications for the position of Community Geographer beginning August
1, 2005 or as soon thereafter as possible. The Community Geographer will
be a fulltime, year-round staff position housed in the Department of
Geography. The primary responsibility of the Community Geographer will
be to work with a wide array of community organizations, social service
providers, foundations, and others to develop innovative spatial
analyses of significant social and community problems. The Community
Geographer will work with community partners, and faculty and students
from Syracuse University and other nearby colleges on research and analysis.

The Community Geographer will be paid by money raised from local and
national foundations. Funding has been secured for the first year and is
pending for later years; after the first year (or later if additional
funding is secured), the successful applicant will be expected to engage
in significant grant writing to guarantee the continuation of the
position. The Community Geographer will have full access to the
Department of Geography s state-of-the-art GIS facilities and software,
university libraries, and other facilities.

We are looking for an energetic individual with at least an MA in
community-based GIS and excellent action-based research skills, who
works well in collaborative situations, will seek out new opportunities
for helping community organizations to better understand the social
problems they confront, and will be adept at involving students in
research projects.

We encourage prospective applicants to write or call Professor Don
Mitchell ([log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>;
315-443-2607) for further information about the position and expectations.

Syracuse University is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer.
The University and Department of Geography are committed to increasing
the diversity of their faculty and staff and especially welcome
application from women, racial/ethnic minorities, and persons with
disabilities. Further information on the department is available at
www.maxwell.syr.edu/geo/ <http://www.maxwell.syr.edu/geo/>.

To apply please send a letter of application, three letters of
recommendation, and, if available, results of previous
research/community work (this can be submitted on cd or other electronic
medium) by June 15, 2005 to Professor Don Mitchell, Chair, Department of
Geography, Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY 13244.
